A lot of students wish to find the answer to this million dollar question: What is an ideal MiM profile to break into a top Masters in Management program? hA friend of mine told me he secured a 750 on the GMAT and wanted to know if this would be sufficient to crack a top school for the Masters in Management degree.This article will help identify certain trends in the admission procedure and is based on a survey taken by 70+ students pursuing Msc Management ( Masters in Management)
GMAT/GRE/Others
MiM Profile Evaluation: The test score is often considered a very important part of the application process. It feels like a good standardised test score is indispensable for the application very much like the presence of Virat Kohli in the indian batting lineup when the team plays overseas. A 700+ GMAT score seems to give a slight edge definitely but a closer look reveals that even a score between 650 and 700 gives the applicant a fighting chance to secure admission if the academic record and other aspects of the profile are strong.The interesting thing to note here is the possibility to gain an admission with a GRE score of 315+ ( Note: This could very relevant for certain people who seem to face difficulties in scoring above 650 in the GMAT exam)
GPA
Academic record is also an integral part of the application very much like how social media has become an integral part of our lives.We can observe that on a 10 point scale anything above 7 on 10 gives a decent shot at admission. A grade below 7 has to be compensated by some solid extra-curricular activities and internships or a stellar GMAT/GRE score to enhance the possibility of gaining admission into a top 10 Masters in Management program.
Work Experience
There is a decent mix of people with 0-3 years of work experience. The sweet spot seems to be about 1 year of work experience.A point to be noted is that among the freshers about 80% of the successful applicants had atleast one previous internship experience.This definitely reiterates the fact that although full time professional experience may not be mandatory, any internship experience during the bachelor degree can significantly enhance the chances of admissions.
Bachelor Degree
The academic diversity is a key highlight in the Masters in Management ( also known as Msc Management) program. Just like how in the Indian Premier League there is a nice balance between Indian and overseas players the top MIM schools strive to maintain this balance.Business majors definitely outnumber people from most other backgrounds. Engineers are not far behind too ( thanks to the contribution of the Indians). Other fields like law, psychology complete the class distribution. It is very important to differentiate your profile from others ( particularly if you are from a business or engineering background) and prove that you are a good fit for the school and the program.
International Experience
A very interesting observation of the survey results revealed that about 41% of the respondents had some sort of international experience in the form of internships,study terms,volunteer activities or short trips abroad.This is very relevant as the Masters in Management degree has people from various ethnic backgrounds and it becomes really imperative to understand the thought processes of different people. A prior exposure to an international and multicultural environment definitely gives a slight edge in this aspect.In conclusion, it becomes very imperative to have a solid application with strong extra-curriculars and diverse internships. A setback in terms of academics can be offset by a soid GMAT/GRE score.
